Create Arbours in the Garden

ARBOURS are distinctive features, which can be introduced into a garden plan and give a lot of pleasure to the eye, as well as providing shady retreats. Arbour is a shady sitting place, usually in a park or garden, and usually surrounded by climbing shrubs or vines and other vegetation.

Arbours can be simply constructed of poles and covered in vines or roses, or roofed with lattice, then draped with growing greenery. Inside shade and seat make a nice retreat, or paving along the floorway makes a happy feature, screened off by hardy plants such as Cotoneasters, Hawthorns, Escallonia, Oleanders or Abelias, the arbour outlook can be through these rows, or along flower-bordered paths to the main, or rose garden.
